God Revealed - PT 8
The names of God reveal to us Who God is. They reveal to us Who Jesus is and what He has done for us and paid for us in His death, burial, and resurrection.
Throughout Scripture when the people of God came to Him during critical points in their lives, even when the circumstances were a result of their own sin, God revealed Himself to them by one of His redemptive names. During the days of Jeremiah, Israel found themselves in a very critical crisis. God's chosen people, whom He had brought into the Promised Land had forsaken Him and turned to worship other gods. Tot the point they sacrificing their own children for their own self preservation, much like abortion today (Jer. 19:4-6). Consequently they found themselves overtaken by the enemy and became exiled into captivity. It was in the midst of this catastrophic crisis that God revealed Himself twice to Israel through the prophet Jeremiah as Jehovah Tsidkenu - the Lord Your Righteousness (Jer. 23:5-6; 33:15-16).
At the time Jeremiah was in prison by the king Zedekiah (Jer. 33:1) for preaching the Word of God like a fire (Jer. 5:14). Even then, God spoke through Jeremiah and said, "I will cleanse you from all your iniquity, whereby you have sinned against me..." (Jer. 33:8). God went on to say, "the house of Israel shall be a place of joy, praise, and honor. Despite your desolation, I will cause a rumor by which all the nations, even those who despise you will hear of all the good I do unto you" (Jer. 33:9). Why? His mercy endures forever (Jer. 33:11). God told Israel, "I will perform all the good things I have Promised unto the house of Israel and SHE (Jerusalem) shall be called, 'the Lord our Righteousness'" (Jer. 33:13-18).
Beloved friends, we are the righteousness of God in Christ. No one can never earn true righteousness, it is a free gift. You can only receive the righteousness of God by faith in His grace. We can't glory in our own righteousness, we can glory in Christ (1 Cor. 1:29-31). Therefore, as we reckon ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus we are to present ourselves as instruments of righteousness and not instruments of sin (Rom. 6:11-13). We are the light of the world, the city on a hill (Mt. 5:14). We are the true Jerusalem (Rev. 21:9-10), the city of righteousness-- Zion who has been redeemed with justice (Is. 1:26-27), the city on a hill, the Body and Church of Christ, sanctified, purchased, and made holy by our Beloved Christ (Eph. 5:25-30).
But like Israel, despite how despised we became because of our own iniquity and sins. God has imputed our sins to Jesus and imputed His righteousness to us. And the Lord our Righteousness is going to cause such a rumor of all the good He does to us His people that it will cause them to fear and tremble for all the good and prosperity that He procures to us (Jer. 33:9). Jehovah Tsidkenu -- the Lord our Righteousness will perform all the good things He has Promised to His house, whose house we are (Heb. 3:6). And SHE (we) will bear His name -- the Lord our Righteousness.
